McNeil Girls take 1st Place at largest Coastal Bend TISCA meet in history

The Mighty Maverick swimmers hopped in a bus at 5:30 in the morning to travel four hours to compete in the largest Coastal Bend TISCA meet in recorded history.  Not only did the Mavericks shine on both the girls and boys sides with inspired swimming, but the girls team was able to run away with the 1st place trophy outscoring all other teams by over one hundred points.  Coach Chapa and I are very proud of their sportsmanship and competitive spirit throughout our stay in Corpus Christi, Texas.  The Mighty Mavericks truly are approaching INVINCIBLE.  Can't wait to unleash this crew on their upcoming Championship Season.

McNeil Maverick Shines in Deaf Olympics in Bulgaria!!!

It took a lot of hard work and fundraising just to get to the Deaf Olympics for Alix Gavin.  Then once you get there...the pressure can be tremendous to perform.  A lot of fifteen year olds wouldn't be able to handle such a situation.  We are very proud to report that Alix Gavin not only dealt well with the situation, but put on quite the performance.

Alix had at least one event on each of the six days of competition giving her quite the competitive load in Sofia, Bulgaria.  She had several personal best swims as well as some HUGE relay swims in helping her United States team, but arguably Alix's biggest accomplishment at the meet came on day 6.  Alix had a huge personal best swim in the 200 breaststroke which earned her 8th place and a trip to the 2013 Deaf Olympics Finals.  There Alix was able to drop another two seconds in a fantastic last individual swim.

Needless to say, everyone in the McNeil community is very proud of our Alix Gavin for representing not only us, but her country in the 2013 Deaf Olympic games.  Alix is an amazing ambassador for us all.  Congratulations Alix!

McNeil Varsity Swimming & Diving Team 2013-14

A great representation of central Texas swimming was seen at this year's tryouts.  It was an honor to see all of the current and future McNeil student-athletes that showed up to this year's tryouts in hopes of representing their school and community in the sport of swimming and diving. The fabulous talent displayed at tryouts makes me very excited for this year's potential. Congratulations to the below athletes in being named to this year's Varsity swimming & diving team:

SENIORS

H. Harris, B. Krusee, T. Ma, K. Morgan, A. Nguyen, C. Scruggs

JUNIORS

C. Chin, M. Glava, A. Gluff, C. Gozdalski, M. Kalina, G. Ma, R. Scruggs, C. Sellers*, K. Shomper, R. Sullivan

SOPHOMORES

A. Gavin, C. Gibbs, J. Harris, K. Jotwani, D. Quinn, J. Trunick, M. Wadehra, M. Warnick

FRESHMEN

N. Bogusch(diver), P. Chin, T. Do, L. Katzman*, H. Krebsbach, S. Iyer, S. Marvin, A. McMillan, C. Meyer*, J. Nelson, N. Shomper, J. Sullivan, A. Thompson, M. Youngman*

Please understand that the selection process is one that is not taken lightly. Everyone who showed up has obviously spent many years working on the craft of swimming. If you happened to not have made the roster this year, I recommend you continue to swim with a local team and tryout again next year. Thank you to everyone for their interest and congratulations to the 2013 - 2014 McNeil Varsity Swimming & Diving Team!!

Also, please understand that if you have made the above roster that you are agreeing to a commitment of staying in shape and working hard for the next two months leading up to the start of school. Failure to abide by this commitment could result in you forfeiting your position on the team.

If your name has a star(*) next to it then there are some special circumstances involved in your commitment to the team(i.e. - competing in a second sport) that need to be agreed upon before the start of the season.  This agreement can be finalized during the first week of school.

Everyone should be receiving an email about up coming team business. If you don't receive an email in the next week you should contact Coach Foss at utfoss9@yahoo.com.

Thanks again, and congratulations!  See you soon.

McNeil forms first boys and girls water polo team

The season was short and sweet, but the interest and commitment was awesome. 20 boys and girls set out to learn the game and each team found themselves winning just enough games to advance to the state water polo tournament. Not bad for a first year. A legendary group of kids that will never be forgotten for what what they began. Congratulations Mavericks!

A swimming perspective...

I’ve realized these past four years of swimming for McNeil high school that swimming in itself isn’t just a sport; it’s a lifestyle. Whether it’s finishing my homework during school so that I don’t have to stay up late, eating healthy foods so that I’m at my full potential for the upcoming swim meet or skipping every party that my friends delve into, every decision I make revolves around reaching my full potential as an athlete. I have dedicated so much of my life towards swimming; yet swimming has given so much back to me.
Swimming has helped me overcome countless struggles in my life, including my parent’s divorce, our house being foreclosed on and the seemingly endless stress of school and life as a high school athlete. Most people don’t understand the magic swimming holds in being able to distract a person from all of their problems to the extent that all they can think about is achieving the constant goal to become faster and greater in the sport. Upon arriving at practice and starting each day’s warm-up, all of my troubles are forgotten in minutes as my mind focuses only on the rhythm of my stroke and keeping my arms moving through the liquid lead most call water. Swimming puts me in a trance to survive every set and better myself tremendously every time I enter the pool.
There is no other sport, club or person in this world that compels me to be the best person I can, and simultaneously gives me a feeling of exponential importance. Now that it’s almost over, all I can do is hold onto the life-lessons I’ve learned from it and thank anyone and everyone who’s ever given me the opportunity to be a member of such a privileged and rewarding sport such as swimming.
